Knowledge of architectural history gives an understanding of the ideas that were important to societies as well as shaped these past societies. A building can reveal much about the society that produced it. This can be from techniques used in construction, materials and resources available.
Throughout history, architecture has stood as a representation of society, reflecting the values, successes, and eventual downfall of civilizations over time, many of these historic cities have shaped our world presently, some practices for design are still used today (Golden ratio) and some have evolved to meet todays needs. As common practice, the right professionals will always start with some background research/information and asking or tackling key issues, concerns and then brainstorming on the concepts. History is certainly a starting point in most professions, and Architecture is certainly no different.
